Charles A. Lindbergh The Spirit of St Louis First Edition Early Issue Book 1953 Signed and Dated by Charles Lindbergh

The First Edition has for sale the very rare signed Charles Lindbergh first edition classic Pulitzer Prize winning book, The Spirit of St Louis.  This book is an autobiography by Charles A. Lindbergh, a  famous US aviation pioneer, which also has a presentation inscription to Hollis Williams who was a British aviator and a Technical Director to Westland Aircraft Ltd.

Dust Jacket

This book comes with its original dust jacket which is rare for this book.  The dust jacket is in Good condition (as opposed to Very Good, Near Fine or Fine) with wear and losses to the spine; wear to the edges; and browning to the inside of the jacket.  This is an extremely rare dust jacket and very nice to have.

Boards

The original blue boards bears the illustration of the Spirit of St Louis in silver to the centre of the front board and has lettering in silver to the spine.  The boards are in overall Very Good condition with knocks to the top and bottom of the spine; slight fading to the spine; and very light corner knocks.  A very attractive set of boards.

Pages

The Spriit of St Louis has 562 numbered pages with 16 pages of illustrations and numerous diagrams and statistics in this award-winning book.  The pages have a slight blue tint to the top and slight age toning and very light and minor spotting to the fore edge (only mentioned for completeness).

Opposite the Title Page is a presentation inscription to Hollis Williams, to give him his full name and title: Mr D.L. Hollis Williams, B.Sc, F.R.AeS; who was a distinguished aviator and a technical director to Westland Aircraft Ltd.

On the Title Page is the signature of Charles A. Lindbergh in full in black ink which he has dated 1953 – the year in which this book was published.

The Copyright Page lacks the Charles Scribner’s “A” which makes us believe that this is the First Edition, Second Impression.

Book Into Film

The Spirit of St Louis is a Pulitzer Prize winning book was made into a movie by Hollywood in 1957 with James Stewart (a World War II flying veteran in his own right) appropriately playing the lead of Charles Lindbergh

The Spirit of St Louis is an exceptional piece of Americana, of museum quality, being a Pulitzer Prize winning signed book by one of America’s leading aviator pioneers, which will make a wonderful addition to any collection and a great heirloom for the future.

Charles Augustus Lindbergh (b. February 4, 1902 – d. August 26, 1974)

Charles Lindbergh was an extraordinary American pioneer of the twentieth century who is accredited to be the first person to fly from the U.S. to France non-stop.  The dust jacket of this documentary record reads (in part) as follows:

“In 1926, on a beautiful moon-clear night, a young pilot of the airmail route between St. Louis and Chicago conceived the ambition to fly a plane non-stop from one hemisphere to another, bridging the waste of water that separates continent from continent….On May 21, 1927 this same young man took off from New York and, after thirty-three hours alone in the cockpit of his single-motored plane, the Spirit of St. Louis, hurtling through canyons of cloud and storm over 3,600 miles of Atlantic, landed on Le Bourget Aerodrome, Paris, thereby completing the first non-stop flight between the continents of America and Europe…”

It should be noted that Lindbergh’s book The Spirit of St Louis was published in 1953 and won the Pulitzer Prize a year later in 1954 for this great autobiography
